The Best Kept Secret in Research?

Key Insights
at a Glance

  • The strongest agency strategies start with insight competitors can’t easily replicate.

  • When everyone has access to the same AI tools, original human insight can become a powerful differentiator.

  • Faster access to expert insight helps agencies keep pace with modern pitches and client demands.

  • Combining research data with expert perspectives creates more credible and compelling client strategies.

I’ve spent my entire career in marketing, and if there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s this: good marketing starts with good insight.

Client feedback, market research, campaign data, competitor intelligence… I’ve always been a big believer in getting the facts before making the decisions. After all, how can we build a great strategy if we don’t really understand the audience, the market or the problem we’re trying to solve?

We have more data than ever. So why does finding genuinely useful insight still feel so hard?

I’ve worked with traditional research agencies for years and I’ve experienced the frustrations firsthand. Long lead times when you need answers yesterday. The challenge of finding genuinely hard-to-reach audiences. And research that can sometimes give you plenty of data but leave you wanting more of the why behind it to building meaning marketing and communication.

Panel research absolutely has its place. It gives you scale, helps identify trends and provides valuable evidence to inform a strategy. I’ve used it throughout my career and know it can work brilliantly.

But around six years ago, I discovered another side of research.

When I moved from tech marketing into the expert network industry around six years ago, it honestly opened my eyes. At the time, it was a relatively unknown market to me. Today, I still believe expert networks are one of the best kept secrets in some markets, particularly comms and PR.

Why?

Because sometimes you don’t need to ask 500 people what they think. You need to talk to the person who actually knows.

  • The technology leader who is making the decisions.
  • The marketer who is seeing client expectations change first-hand.
  • The industry specialist who knows what is happening behind the headlines.
  • The former executive who can give you a perspective that simply isn’t available from a standard respondent.

And for comms and PR agencies, I think this is particularly powerful.

Because your clients aren’t paying you to give them the same insight everyone else has. They want strategies that stand out. They want ideas that challenge the status quo. They want pitches that make them sit up and listen.

And increasingly, they want content that feels real.

In a world of AI-generated content, recycled statistics and generic thought leadership, firsthand insight from people who are actually in the market can be incredibly powerful. It gives your story substance. It gives your strategy credibility. And, importantly, it gives you something others don’t have.

So no, I’m not suggesting we ditch traditional research. Far from it.

I’m suggesting we broaden the toolkit.

Use data to tell you what is happening. Use experts to help you understand why. Then bring the two together to create something more compelling, more credible and ultimately more valuable for your client. And IDR can help with both (in case you’re wondering!).

Because today, the competitive advantage isn’t necessarily having more information.

It’s having access to the right information, from the right people, at the right time.

And that, in my view, is where expert networks come into their own.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What is expert network research for communications agencies? Expert network research connects agency teams directly with verified industry specialists — former regulators, sector executives, niche stakeholders — for qualitative interviews that inform strategy, messaging and client recommendations.
  2. How is expert insight different from other methods of primary research? Expert insight provides access to specialist knowledge and first-hand experience that is often difficult or impossible to capture through traditional primary research methods. Unlike surveys or customer research, expert insight can help organizations understand not just what is happening, but why, what happens next and what it means for a specific business decision.
  3. How quickly can communications agencies access expert insight? With the right expert network, agencies can typically connect with verified experts within days, significantly faster than traditional qualitative research houses which can take weeks.
  4. Why does authentic human insight matter more in the age of AI? As AI tools make generic content easier to produce, differentiation increasingly comes from insight that is genuinely hard to replicate. Authentic expert perspectives — particularly from niche or hard-to-reach sources — give agencies a strategic edge that AI-generated research cannot provide.
